The Civil Protection and Crisis Planning Directorate (DSB) invites all municipalities to participate in the "Self-preparedness" Week 2021 - where the aim is to better prepare residents to cope with various crisis situations. This year, Alone Week (Egenberedskapsuka 2021) will run on week 44, November 1-7.
What is Egenberedskap (self-standing)?
Egenberedskap is about getting ready for unexpected situations. The more people are able to take care of themselves and help others in the event of an accident, the better equipped we are as a society. Because there can be many causes of the crisis. This is often caused by a lot of rain, strong winds or technical problems. These situations have serious consequences for society as a whole, including you and your family. If the electricity goes out or you are isolated for several days due to the weather, you should be prepared to cope on your own for at least three days.
How to be prepared. "Self-preparedness" week in Norway
Most of us are completely dependent on electricity in our daily lives; for heating, lighting, cooking, hot water and electrical appliances. Storms, natural disasters, sabotage, technical problems, terrorism or military operations may lead to the loss of e.g. electricity or water by many people, and obtaining the necessary goods may be difficult. The chances may not be great, but it can happen. Then you should be prepared. By having a small supply of what you are most dependent on - water, food, medicine and heat sources - you are better equipped to self-manage for a few days.
Assess the risks and what the consequences could be
Consider what could have happened, what consequences it could have had, and how your family would have handled it. Find out who may need your help and how you can contribute to that help. If there is hardware you plan to use in an emergency, familiarize yourself with its use and make sure it works.
How you can cover your basic needs for three days. Loneliness Week in Norway
The basic needs to be met in the first three days of the crisis are heat, drinks, food, medicine, hygiene and information. Many of us already have quite a bit of what we need for a few days to cope.
If you have the essentials in place to cope on your own for at least three days, you are prepared for most crises. If the crisis is prolonged, these preparations have bought you time and space for further planning. At the same time, you help those who need it most and can get help first.
