The Ministry of Justice and Crisis Preparedness submitted a draft act on the extension of the entry restriction act until May 1, 2022.

The ambition is to completely abolish entry restrictions

- The extension of the law does not have to mean that entry restrictions will apply until May 2022. The government is constantly debating whether or not there can be relief. However, the ambition is complete lifting of entry restrictions - says the Minister of Justice and Crisis Management Emilie Enger Mehl.

The temporary law on entry restrictions for foreigners was passed in July 2020. This law aims to limit the right of entry for foreigners. All this when necessary to protect public health from the COVID-19 outbreak. Currently, the law is in force until December 31, 2021.

Danger of new virus variants

- Although Norwegian society has largely returned to normal, the pandemic is not over yet. We must be prepared for the situation to worsen again. The low vaccination rate in many countries and the danger of new virus variants indicate that entry restrictions may also be needed some time after December 1. I believe that it is right to present this draft to the Storting, rather than possibly using powers in the Infection Control Act to reinstate entry restrictions. Among other things, in the event of a deterioration of the situation - says the Minister of Justice and Crisis Management.
