On November 1, one million Norwegians were retired from Nav for the first time. Over the past ten years, the average increase has been close to 300.

This corresponds to an increase of just over 40 percent and means that every sixth Norwegian is now retired.

– The fact that we now have around one million retirees is both a positive and a difficult milestone for Norway. On the one hand, this is because more people are alive longer and has better health. Simultaneously this development is challenging for the sustainability of the pension system in the coming decades, said Director of Labor and Social Welfare Hans Christian Holte in a press release.

In addition to increased life expectancy, Nav highlights two important causes of growth:

* Many of the birth waves from the post-war years are past retirement age, and the vast majority are now retiring as well.

* Flexible receipt of a pension was introduced with the pension reform in 2011. Majority people were then able to receive pensions after the age of 62.
