MEPs will discuss with Haugen on 8th November negative impact on product users and business models of large tech companies and how EU digital rules can solve these problems.

Frances Haugen is a data scientist. He has a bachelor's degree in computer science and a master's degree in business administration. She has worked for many famous companies such as Google, Yelp, Pinterest and is a former Facebook manager. Haugen encourages tighter regulation of Facebook and the disclosure of internal mechanisms and algorithms that affect the content promoted on this site. Haugen has in its time provided the media with tens of thousands of pages of the corporation's internal documents.
Work is underway in Parliament to regulate platforms
The hearing of Frances Haugen is organized by the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection European Parliament. All in cooperation with other committees: Industry, Legal Affairs, Civil Liberties and special committees on disinformation and artificial intelligence.
Internet security, transparency of algorithms and risk reduction in relation to the proposed Act on digital services (DSA) will be among the issues raised during the hearing.
A safer digital space where users' rights are protected
This draft law aims to create a safer digital space in which users' rights are protected. The draft includes provisions to tackle illegal content online, make algorithms more accountable and transparent, and deal with content moderation and targeted advertising.
Ms Haugen's presentation will feed into the work of the committee ahead of the vote, the date of which will be fixed shortly. Undoubtedly, the new legislation is an opportunity for Europe to shape the digital economy at the EU level. As a result, the EU will become a global standard setter for digital regulation.
