Escape, Great Freedom and Quo Vadis Aida? will compete for the LUX Audience Award

Three films selected for the 2022 LUX Audience Award were unveiled at the European Film Awards in Berlin on Saturday.

President of the European Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education, Sabine Verheyen, said:

“European cinema is a mirror of our society. It is one of the easiest ways to communicate our European values ​​of equality, freedom of expression and democracy. As the Culture Committee, we are extremely proud of it.

Films nominated for the Film Award LUX audiences are, as always, of high artistic quality, each representing a different angle of our European history. These films deserve our attention because they move us and always make us think. Congratulations to everyone who worked on the selected films. Now the choice is ours. As Europeans, we can all watch and vote for films. The decision on which film wins the LUX Audience Award is ours.”

Discovering movies. What movie will get LUX Audience Award

"Escape" Danish director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, produced by Denmark, France, Sweden, Norway. In this animation, Amin tells about his journey as an Afghan refugee child who came to Denmark alone. He tries to come to terms with the past, but also with himself and the secrets he hides.

"Great Freedom" by the Austrian director Sebastian Meise, produced by Austria and Germany. In post-war Germany, Hans ends up in prison again and again for being gay. He is systematically denied his liberty for violating section 175 of the German Criminal Code. The only constant element in his life is his longtime cellmate, Viktor, convicted of a murderer.

"Quo vadis Aida?" Bosnian director Jasmili Žbanić, produced by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, the Netherlands, France, Poland, Norway, Germany, Romania and Turkey. Aida is an interpreter for the Peacekeepers in the summer of 1995 in Srebrenica. Her family is among the thousands of civilians seeking refuge in the UN camp. Aida learns a terrible fate awaits her family and people, but can she do anything to stop it?

Next steps

The three nominated films will now be subtitled in 24 official EU languages. Their screenings in EU cinemas will be promoted and supported.

EU citizens will be able to vote for these films from December 12. The winner will be chosen jointly by the Members of Parliament European Parliament and public opinion, each of them will constitute 50% of the votes.

The vote will end on May 25, 2022 and the winning film will be announced on June 8, 2022 at the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg.

Background. The European Parliament established the LUX Film Prize in 2007.

From 2020, the LUX - European Audience Film Award is awarded by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy in cooperation with the European Commission and the Europa Cinemas network.

The European Parliament established the LUX Film Prize in 2007, primarily to help distribute European films of high artistic quality. These films reflect cultural diversity in Europe and beyond, and address topics of common interest such as human dignity, equality, non-discrimination, integration, tolerance, justice and solidarity.
