Record number of accident victims

– March was a very sad month in terms of road traffic. 14 road deaths is a significant increase compared to 2023 and previous years. This increase worries us, says department director Guro Ranes at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.

Nine men, four women and one boy died. Two of them are pedestrians. Seven died in head-on accidents, four in downhill accidents and one in an e-scooter accident. In one of the collisions three died people.

In total, there were twelve accidents in Agder, Rogaland, Telemark, Østfold, Oslo, Innlandet, Møre and Romsdal, Trøndelag and Troms.

– We are entering a season where more people are on the road. Both bicycles and motorcycles will become part of road traffic again. It's especially important now that everyone is aware of this because there will be some groups of road users who won't always be easy to spot, Ranes insists.

This year, 22 people have died

A total of 22 people died in road accidents in January, February and March. There are nine more than last year and the most since 2020, when 24 people died in the same period.

The Norwegian Public Roads Authority, the police and other institutions are constantly working to improve road safety. However, if the number of accidents is to reduce, each of us must contribute.

Ranes has the following appeal to road users:

– We know what works. Observe the speed limit and adapt it to the conditions, drive without drugs, wear a seatbelt seatbelts and keep your attention on the road. The only thing you have to do is drive.

Every accident is a tragedy

The number of accidents varies from year to year and month to month. Fortunately, over time the number of dead and seriously injured decreased. Last year, 113 people died in road accidents, compared to 147 in 2014.

– Every road accident they are in fatalities and serious injuries are a tragedy and each accident is one too many. We all need to continue working to reduce accidents, says Ranes.
