Norges Bank defies uncertainty over omicron and infection control and is raising its key interest rate by 0,25 percentage points.

The central bank announced this on Thursday morning. The main rate was raised by 0,25 points percentage to 0,5 percent.

The prime interest rate was 0,25 percent since the December interest rate meeting. Norges Bank signaled that there will most likely be another increase in December.

Before the interest rate meeting, however, there was widespread agreement among macroeconomists that the bank would choose to be cautious in this round under the circumstances. It is highly uncertain how much the omicron variant and enhanced infection control measures will hit the Norwegian economy.
