Thousands of people gathered in front of the Presidential Palace in Poland on Sunday to demonstrate against the controversial new media law.

Many protesters waved EU flags, shouting "free media" and "we want a veto." They are asking President Andrzej Duda not to sign the act.

Several famous journalists and politicians were among the demonstrators.

- We are here today to defend free media. When we stand together in solidarity, we will win. We want to pave the way for this government together, said the former EU leader Donal Tusk, who is now the leader of the opposition party of the Civic Platform.

The law will prevent companies based outside the EEA from holding majority shares in Polish media companies. The right-wing populist government says the goal is to protect the media landscape from Russia and other potentially hostile powers.

Critics believe the real goal is to gag the US news channel TVN24 - the largest independent news channel in the country.
