- The demand for nurses is huge. The pandemic showed us that, and that was the reality even before the crisis came about with it. The government will increase quotas and ask educational institutions to increase admissions by 500 new places, says Research and Higher Education Minister Ola Borten Moe.

We also want better access to internships

There are many candidates for nursing studies. This year, nearly nine percent of all applicants through coordinated admissions had a nursing degree as their first choice. By creating more study places, more people will have the opportunity to become nurses and nurses. As a result, the society will have the greater part of its needs met. About 5100 students enrolled in nursing this fall. 500 new learning places means significant growth.

- 500 study places are not everything, but it is an important start. We also want better access to internships. In the future, we will continue to work on increasing skills in nursing education, says Ola Borten Moe, Minister of Science and Higher Education.

The government is now proposing to fund 300 new nursing study places. Institutions should, as far as possible, prioritize the further education of midwives, health nurses and ABIOK nurses (anesthesia, children, intensive care, surgery, cancer). We ask that educational institutions subsidize the remaining 200 places for basic education in nursing by reallocating their own funds.

– One of the government's most important priorities is to provide a sufficient number of specialists, not only nurses healthcare service, but also caring. We have just established a Commission on Health Personnel, which will propose specific measures in this area. In addition to more long-term work, we continue to work to support professionals in ministry. We already have funds for several educational positions for specialist nurses, and we are currently preparing a package of activities for hospitals in the new year, says Minister of Health and Care Ingvild Kjerkol
