The average monthly salary in 2021-2022 increased by 4,6 percent. This is the highest wage increase in many years.

“Wage growth in 2022 is the highest we have measured since 2008. Still, last year we were able to shop for less on average as prices rose much more. SSB section manager Tonje Køber reports in a press release.

Average monthly salary per employee full-time amounted to NOK 53 in November.

This is an increase of 4,6 percent over the previous year.

The highest in the oil industry

A press release from Statistics Norway said wage growth accelerated in several industries, but wages rose by far the most in the oil industry, where monthly wages rose by 7,6 percent to NOK 82.

– The high dynamics of wages in the oil industry is largely due to a large increase in bonuses. This probably has to do with the fact that it was a good year for the industry, with a lot of activity and higher oil and gas prices, says Køber.

In industry, wages increased by 5,4 percent.

In the education sector, it increased by 2,3%, which is clearly less than in other areas.

– The reason is last year's teachers' strike, which ended in September with the appointment of a forced pay committee. Many people working in education have not yet received their annual salary increase, says Køber.

The gap between men and women

According to the Norwegian Statistical Office, the gender pay gap is growing.

Køber says the explanation for this is the low wage growth in the municipal sector, where many women work.

At the end of 2022 women's wages accounted for 87,6 percent men's earnings. This is down from 87,9 percent a year earlier. This means that the wage gap has increased.

Excluding municipal administration, women recorded higher wage increases than men in both state administration and the private sector. Overall, however, the wage gap has widened, writes SSB.
