If you want to buy an electric car without taxes, 2022 is your last chance. So says Thor Egil Braadland, contact with NAF authorities. However, it warns against VAT increases for cars that will not be delivered before 2023.

Politicians have long wanted to introduce VAT on the most expensive electric cars. Braadland says the electric car will be VAT free throughout 2022, but consumers will face VAT on electric cars from January 1, 2023.

- The government has promised and reported VAT on part of the amount for an electric car, the price of which exceeds 600. crowns, so we have to take it into account from 2023 - he says.

Fight against full VAT on electric cars

Braadland argues that VAT on electric cars is inevitable in the long run, but there is a struggle over time as to when and how it will be introduced.

The NAF believes that as long as the authorities want to reduce emissions from the car fleet, it is better to exempt electric cars from VAT.

“We haven't had this tax so far, and we're happy with it,” says Braadland.

Delivery problems can lead to a reduction in VAT

As you know, in the fall of 2021 there were problems with the delivery of some models. However, Braadland warns that if this situation continues until 2022, there is a risk that an electric car ordered in 2022 will not be delivered by 2023. Then the VAT rules apply when you receive the car, not when it is ordered , warns Braadland.

We advise those who order a new car in 2022 to take advantage of the automotive industry standard contract. It gives you the right to cancel your purchase if the total price increase is greater than six percent.

The Facts: Taxes on Electric Cars in 2022:

  • No tax on the purchase of electric cars. All gasoline and diesel cars, including rechargeable hybrids, have several purchase taxes in addition to VAT.
  • No VAT on electric cars. All other cars have 25% VAT.
  • Motor insurance fee (previous annual fee): NOK 8,15 per day / NOK 2975 per year for electric cars. This is the same level as for a gasoline car.
  • Re-registration fee (new scheme from 2022, applies to used cars): NOK 1670 for newer cars (2019 and newer), NOK 1009 for older electric cars (2010-2018). That's a quarter of the tier of a gasoline car.
  • About fawn fees at collection points fees (bomstasjon).
