However, players will not compete in cross-country skiing, athletics or handball. This time it's all about math.
The Mathematics Olympics will be held at the Rebel Arena in July.
- We are looking forward to the summer when young people from over 100 countries will come together to compete to forge friendships across national borders, religion, identity, politics and ethnicity, says Yngvar Reichelt, office manager at the Mathematics Department. He is the event manager of IMO 2022.
"With this event, we want to raise science in general and math in particular," says Reichelt
The International Olympiad in Mathematics (IMO) was first held in Romania in 1959 with seven participating countries. Norway has been involved since 1984. It currently has around 600 participants from 110 countries.
"The participants cannot be graduated from university or college, so mostly high school students come, but there are also some younger participants," says Reichelt.
The competition itself lasts two days. Each day, participants have four and a half hours to solve problems in algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory. The medal ceremony will be held at the Oslo City Hall.
We keep our fingers crossed for the representatives of Poland
We are already keeping our fingers crossed for the representatives of Poland, who in the previous edition won a total of 6 medals (1 gold and 5 silver). The Polish team took 13th place in the team classification.
We will certainly come back to the topic, although not all of us are "eagles" in mathematics.
