According to a study by the Norwegian Media Authority, over six times more people in the 16-20 age group than in the general population received hateful comments on the Internet.

25% of 16–20 year olds surveyed responded that they had experienced some form of hateful Internet comment against them in the past twelve months. According to the Norwegian Media Authority, four percent of the population generally responds the same.

In the 16-20 age group, hateful comments on Snapchat and Tiktok appear the most.

– 38 percent of people who received hateful comments received them on Snapchat, and 26 percent received them on Tiktok. More than 60 percent of the portion of the population that received hateful comments received them via Facebook, he writes Norwegian Office for Media in the report.

The study was conducted by Kantar on behalf of the Norwegian Media Authority. In total, 506 people aged 16–20 were interviewed, additionally 534 aged 16+.

Gender differences

12% of young people say they have been exposed to hate speech directed against skin color, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and disability. These are statements prohibited by the Penal Code.

It also turns out that there are gender differences. More than twice as many girls as boys aged 16-20 say they have been negatively affected by exposure to hate speech. Most people list consequences such as poorer self-esteem or self-image.

The Norwegian Media Authority also conducted more detailed interviews with 16 young people. For more knowledge on what's behind the answers. This is where gender differences also emerge.

- Many of the boys we talked to say that you have to allow yourself to joke with yourself, for example in games. On the other hand, a few also claim that it may be too much. The girls support each other while boys appear to "can take" a little more, says director Mari Velsand of the Norwegian Media Authority in a press release.

Body and appearance

The remarks of young people regarding body and appearance were especially difficult to forget.

- Young people in Tiktok experience a lot of hatred, especially in relation to body, gender and sexuality. The pressure of provocative comments is seen as enormous. The young people thought that people seemed to be looking for something to criticize. Both girls and boys believe that girls are most at risk of physical abuse, the auditor writes in a survey review.

It is emphasized that boys can also feel depressed if they do not fit the idealized male body image of being tall, strong and muscular.

The boys said that many of the objectively hateful statements are made under the guise of humor.

- Just speaking senselessly or "throwing meat" can lower the threshold for saying things. Which in other contexts would be defined as racism or homophobia. Boys believe that this form of interaction can help prepare each other for better results, both in sports and games. Stories about boys appeared at the same time. Who came so close to the aggressive tone that they stopped playing, writes the auditor.
