As of yesterday, the Norwegian Tax Office started sending tax returns to approximately 5,1 million employees, retirees and sole proprietors. Preliminary data shows that 2,7 million people are likely to receive tax breaks.

The first tax returns have been sent

– Tax returns will be sent in batches from March 7 to March 22. Not everyone will receive tax information at the same time. When your tax return is ready, we will inform you so you do not have to log in to skatteetaten.no before receiving the notification, says tax director Nina Schanke Funnemark.

Although the Internal Revenue Service has collected and completed a lot of information in advance, completing your tax return is still your responsibility.

– Tax authorities have a lot of information, but we don't know everything. Your tax return may contain errors or missing informationand which you must enter yourself. Therefore, you should check whether the information in your tax return is correct and make any changes if necessary, says Schanke Funnemark.

7 out of 10 expect to get their money back

Preliminary data shows that 2,7 million people will probably receive tax breaks. On average it is NOK 17 per person and in total NOK 200 billion.

Might be worth checking

Last year's tax return and settlement data show that many people can benefit from checking their tax returns. When the tax notice was sent out in March 2023, 2,9 million people were eligible for tax breaks. After processing tax returns and sending all returns, this number increased to 3,2 million.

The figures show that people have made changes to their tax returns which have resulted in them paying less tax. For example, it may be that they have filled in information that was not previously filled in, or have made other changes to their tax return.

You should check this out:

  • Information about your income, assets, housing and loans is pre-filled in your tax return. Check if the numbers are correct.
  • Not sure if you're eligible for a deduction? Take advantage website: skatteetaten.no/fradragsveileder .
  • Have you sold or rented a house? This may be taxable and you may be entitled to a deduction. Check skatteetaten.no/bolig .
  • Is something missing ? You have to add, among others, cryptocurrency, foreign loans and private loans.

New this year

This year, loans and interest on loans are split evenly on your tax return among those who have loans with others. This means that if you and your spouse or common-law partner are responsible for a home loan, the loan will be split 50 percent on your tax return. If three people took out a loan, each of you would receive 33,3 percent and so on. The same applies to interest rates. They can change the schedule themselves if it is incorrect.

Anyone who has a loan from others should check that the distribution on their tax return is correct. If they want to have a different division, they can change it themselves in their tax return. Anyone responsible for the loan must adjust the percentage on their tax return to bring the total to 100 percent.

Some received help from their parents in entering the housing market. If the parents are co-borrowers, they will receive the loan in their tax return. If they do not want to have the loan on their tax return, they can change their share to 0%. The child must then increase his or her share to 100 percent so that the sum of the shares is 100 percent.

When will my tax refund come?

Most people receive their tax return before July, others have to wait until the fall. You will receive a notification when your tax return is ready.

If you do not submit your tax return on time or you have tax arrears, you will receive your tax settlement in June at the earliest. Spouses receive their tax returns at the same time, so if your spouse misses a payment or receives back taxes, you also have to wait until June at the earliest.

When you receive your tax return

Unfortunately, we are unable to tell you exactly when you will receive your tax return, either by phone or through other channels. When your tax return is ready, you will be notified by email or text message.

– There may be several reasons why some people receive their tax return later than others. We can't say why exactly you didn't receive yours, but it could be anything from a complicated tax return to the fact that you were taken for a random check, says Nina Schanke Funnemark.

If you receive back tax, you only have to pay it after the summer. You will receive the invoice well before the payment due date.

Practical information about your tax return

Tax returns are sent on various days between March 7 and March 22. When it's ready and you can check it out, we'll send you an email or text message. The tax return in paper form is also sent between March 7 and March 22.

Even if you receive your tax return on paper, you can log in to skatteetaten.no to view it.

If you have questions about your tax return, you can contact us via skatteetaten.no/kontakt . Current information and guidance can also be found on the website skateetaten.no .

The delivery deadline is as before: April 30 for employees and retirees and May 31 for self-employed people.

An important milestone for the business

This year, all Norwegian companies, around 400 in total, must file a new tax return. The new corporate tax notice has been phased in over the last four years. The company must complete and submit its tax return/company return and business statement via its accounting system or annual reporting program.

If you run a sole proprietorship, in the vast majority of cases you can still file a tax return without having an accounting system or annual returns program. All sole traders will receive a tax return in March.

With the new tax return, approximately 60 forms with a total of 6500 fields will disappear for good. Now you can no longer use old forms in Altinn.

Fraud. Warning and reminder

Tax reporting season is peak season for fraudulent senders of emails and text messages that apparently pretend to come from the Swedish tax office.

Every year, new varieties of fake emails and text messages, called phishing, appear around tax returns, tax cards and tax returns.

“Fraud attempts are becoming more and more advanced and look very credible. This means people need to be particularly vigilant when messages containing links or logins are likely to come from us, for example from us at the Norwegian tax office, says director of communications safety at the tax office, Ragna Fossen.

Tax office tips on what you can do to avoid getting scammed:

  1. Take a close look at the emails and text messages you receive. Critically evaluate the email/SMS, check the sender and consider whether it may be legitimate. Healthy skepticism is never bad.
  2. Compare the sender's address with previous real emails/SMS. Pay particular attention to false sender addresses, bad language and spelling errors. Criminals are getting better at imitating logos, colors and language.
  3. Be especially careful if you are asked to provide sensitive information such as account numbers or security codes in an email/text message.
  4. Do not open attachments from strangers, do not indiscriminately click on links, rather enter the web address in the browser yourself.
  5. Especially on mobile devices, it may be tempting to click a link on the fly, don't do it.
  6. If in doubt, please check again with the correct sender, for example at skatteetaten.no or call us at 800 80 000.
