On Thursday, March 7, Minister of Justice and Emergency Emilie Enger Mehl opened a new police station in Mortensrud in Oslo.

The police will have their new headquarters at Mortensrud Square in the Søndre Nordstrand district.

Will it be safer in Mortensrud?

– Once this station is operational, there will be a permanent police presence in this part of Oslo again. Many have asked for this. Local preventive policing is important to the local community, regardless of whether it is remote commune, or a densely populated neighborhood like here in Mortensrud, Mehl said.

Police from Oslo has been active for a long time preventive measures in Mortensrud and will continue to do so. A separate section deals with preventing the recruitment of children and young people into crime and criminal environments.

Juvenile and gang crime

– Mortensrud is a wonderful place. Many people live here who are passionate about their local environment. There are some challenges here too. Particularly disturbing is the emergence juvenile crime and gangs. Police presence is important to prevent crime, especially among children and teenagers, Mehl says.

The Mortensrud police need to have a public reception, people they need to get help and have the ability to report cases if necessary.

– To protect the safety of citizens, the police must be present, visible and accessible in the local community. The police must know well local conditions and must make every effort to forestall crimes and undesirable events. A visible and present police force ensures greater security local communities in rural and urban areas throughout Norway, says Mehl.
