Literature has never been so important as a communicator of fundamental values ​​as at this year's book fair in Warsaw. This is where Norway was the guest of honor. With the war in Ukraine in the background, the fair was an important reminder never to take freedom and democracy for granted.

Norway was the guest of honor at the event on May 26-29 in Warsaw. Freedom, democracy, diversity and equality were at the center of attention. The topic was reinforced by Norwegian, Polish and Ukrainian voices, which testify to the role that literature plays in defending our common European values. They shared the stage with Ukrainian writers, publishers and guests.

Nordic genre of crime novels and movies

Poland is an important market for Norwegian literature, and the book fair in Warsaw is the most important place for literary meetings in the country. There is great interest in everything from Nordic mainstream novels and crime fiction to literature for children and comics from Norway. The Guest of Honor project gave a large Polish audience the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about contemporary Norwegian authors and their books. It can also be a tool to better understand Norwegian culture, Norwegian values ​​and our approach to life.

Government Norway invests in giving Norwegian life cultural and international momentum. Together with the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry Foreign Affairs They work to make Norwegian art and culture visible internationally and to increase cultural exports. The Guest of Honor project was planned and implemented by NORLA (Center for Norwegian Literature Abroad) in close cooperation with the Norwegian Embassy in Warsaw.

90 people visited the book fair at the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw

A four-day program with 30 Norwegian authors and 50 events resulted in a new viewership record. Over 90 people visited the book fair at the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. Polish translators Iwona Zimnicka, Maria Gołębiewska-Bijak and Maria Sibińska received royal recognition during the fair. It was also a reminder of the importance of translators for Norwegian literature and culture in Poland.
