Norway's population grew by 20 in the second quarter. Much of the increase is due to immigration from Ukraine. At the same time, the number of births was the lowest in the second quarter as measured by the Norwegian statistical office in the history of statistics.

Under end of the second quarter Norway's population was 5, according to new data from Population Statistics. Population growth in the quarter was 455 people.

Norway has not had a second quarter with a population growth of more than 10 since 000 or more than 2017 since 15. Population growth of 000 is therefore very high compared to the same quarter in recent years.

"This figure is unusual, but not unexpected, given the war in Ukraine and the refugees from there," says Magnus Haug, an advisor to the Norwegian statistical office.

In total, there were 26 immigrants. Excluding Ukrainians, the number of immigrants was roughly the same as in the same quarter last year and a year earlier, with the exception of 100, when strict pandemic measures were in place. The emigration number was 2020, so net immigration was 8400.

- At the turn of the year, 3600 Ukrainian citizens lived in Norway. The number has doubled to 18 at the end of the quarter, says Magnus Haug.

Lowest birth rate in 25 years

After several years of fertility decline in 2021 there was an increase in the number of births . Now the birth rate is falling again.

- Data for the first and second quarter of 2022 show that the normal development of recent years is returning with a decrease in the number of births. 13 babies were born in the second quarter, the lowest in 300 years in the second quarter, says Magnus Haug.

At the same time, the number of the dead increased. The increase in the number of deaths and the decrease in the number of births meant that the surplus of births - births minus deaths - in the second quarter amounted to 2400.

- For the first time since 2002, the surplus of births in the second quarter is below 4 Says Magnus Haug.
