Even if you are "only" taking a short trip to the store. Even if you have "only" a few hundred meters to drive, a car with snow on the roof, ice on the windshield or fogged up windows can cost you a fine or even the loss of your driving license.

Here are our tips:

  • Always keep a snow brush and ice scraper in your car
  • Remove ice, snow and steam from the windows inside
  • The roof, lights, side mirrors and number plates must also be kept free of snow
  • If you have interior heating, use

Remove ice, snow and dew from the windows

Many people take risks and hit the road with only a small "visor" in the windshield, and the police struggle with limited visibility. Those who are not "caught" by the police are a huge threat to the rest of the traffic.

Traffic regulations state that drivers must ensure that they have sufficient visibility in all directions. Snow, ice, misted windows, etc. must not obstruct or obstruct visibility.

The police inform us that their enforcement practice is as follows: As long as the "wiper field" on the windshield as well as the side windows in front of the B-pillar (front side windows) are clear of snow, ice and misted up, there is no reaction.

If it has been scraped off or less removed, we may receive a fine and in some cases may mean stopping your driving license on the spot.

Be mindful of fogged up windows inside

The general requirement is therefore good visibility through all windows used for viewing. This means that the windows must be free of snow and ice, as well as fogging up on the inside. What is "enough" will only be a subjective judgement.

Window scraping and snow removal

Also remember to remove snow from the hood and roof. While driving, the snow can be blown away and make it quite uncomfortable or dangerous for others behind you to ride. In addition, you may be surprised yourself when snow suddenly lifts off the bonnet and hits the windshield. Also, when you brake, snow left on the roof can slide onto the windshield and you will lose visibility. Such an often heavy layer of snow is also difficult to remove by wipers.

Cover the windows or the whole car

If your car is parked outside, you can cover the windshield or the entire car with a suitable cover. Such a cover or blanket, which covers only the windshield, will make it easier to "clear snow" from the car.

What can be the effects of control?

A car that is carelessly cleared of snow and scraped off can therefore be "rewarded" with a fine.

If you are stopped with a view out of a window smaller than an A4 sheet, your driving license will be suspended on the spot. A driving license can be suspended even if the visibility is greater than an A4 sheet, but this depends on the time, place and road conditions.
