What is the penalty for driving too fast?

Speed is one of the main causes of road accidents. Speeding can also result in a ticket and loss of your driving license. From February 1, 2023, the penalty rates increased. The fines are the same for everyone whether you are a student or a billionaire.

Increasing fines for speeding

Speeding is punishable by a fine or imprisonment, see § 31 of the Road Traffic Law together with § 5 i § 6 . For minor speeding offences, the rules on simplified orders in traffic cases apply . This simplification means that you will receive the ticket on the spot, and accepting it will end the matter. From February 1, 2023, the rates increased. This is all very schematic according to § 1 Regulation

If the speed limit is 60 km/h or less and you are driving:
  • 5 km/h too fast, the fee is NOK 1100
  • 10 km/h too fast, the fine is NOK 3000
  • 15 km/h too fast, the rate is NOK 5400
  • 20 km/h too fast, a fine of NOK 7800
  • 25 km/h too fast, the penalty is NOK 12.

When the speed limit is 70 km/h or more and you are driving:

  • 5 km/h too fast, the fee is NOK 1100
  • 10 km/h too fast, the fine is NOK 3000
  • 15 km/h too fast, NOK 4800 was agreed
  • 20 km/h too fast, the penalty is NOK 6700
  • 25 km/h too fast, load is NOK 9100
  • 30 km/h too fast, the fee is NOK 12
  • 35 km/h too fast, the fine is NOK 14.

If the speed limit is 90 km/h or more and you exceed the speed limit by 36 km/h up to and including 40 km/h, the fine is NOK 15.

Higher speeds and consequences

If you are driving faster than stated above, the matter cannot be handled with a simplified report. The rate of the fine increases gradually until the final starting point is social punishment or imprisonment. IN Circular No. 2/2021 on page 4, the Prosecutor General defined the limits of social punishment and imprisonment:
  • Speed limit 50 km/h: social punishment from 92 km/h inclusive and prison from 96 km/h inclusive
  • Speed limit 60 km/h: social punishment from 110 km/h inclusive and prison from 115 km/h inclusive
  • Speed limit 70 km/h: social punishment from 120 km/h inclusive and imprisonment from 125 km/h inclusive
  • Speed limit 80 km/h: social punishment from 130 km/h inclusive and prison from 136 km/h inclusive
  • Speed limit 90 km/h: social punishment from 142 km/h inclusive and prison from 150 km/h inclusive
  • Speed limit 100 km/h: civil penalty from 155 km/h inclusive and prison from 165 km/h inclusive.

Point load

In addition to fines, social fines or imprisonment, speeding can result in the loss of your license or penalty points on your license. This is regulated by art. 33 of the Road Traffic Law regulations on the loss of driving licenses, etc. , often referred to as loss regulations, and penalty points .
Chapter 2-2 of the Licensing Terms regulates the periods of disqualification from driving for various speeding offences, and determines the beginning of the period of disqualification. Some examples are:
  • Loss time 3 to 6 months if you drive 66 to 75 km/h in zone 40
  • Loss time 8 to 12 months if you drive 100 to 106km / this 60 zone
  • Time to lose 30 to 36 months if you drive between 170 and 180 km/h in zone 80.

These are penalty points and there is room for judgment in determining the period of disqualification. Attention should be paid to the effects that the loss of a driving license is assumed to have on the holder if the effect appears to be significantly more onerous than normal, see chapter 1-3 driving license loss regulations .

Speeding gives 2 or 3 points according to provisions on penalty fees § 3 second paragraph. From section 4 it also states that anyone who scores "eight points or more in three years" loses his license for six months.
