November 15 is Equal Pay Day. From now until the end of the year, women in Norway work basically for free. According to Unio, women earn 87,5% of what men do.

The wage gap is almost 13 percent. And the equal pay gap grows with education, here it's 20 percent, according to Union .

- If we count part-time jobs, the difference is as much as 40 percent. This is an injustice that is confirmed year after year, says leader Unio Ragnhild Lied.

One reason is that women work much more part-time, and Lied points out that there is no equal pay for work of equal value.

– The education of engineers and nurses is the same. In the municipal sector, an engineer earns money on average NOK 85 more than a nurse. Women-dominated sectors, such as health care and education, are systematically paid less than male-dominated sectors.

Unio believes the new government must demand a binding escalation plan and an extended framework for collective bargaining in the public sector from the social partners.

- It is about using remuneration as a tool to break the gender-segregated educational and career choices. Employers in the public sector must offer full-time jobs and living conditions so that you can work full-time until retirement age in female-dominated occupations, says Lied.
