What is the penalty for driving too fast?

Speed ​​is one of the most important causes of road accidents. Speeding may also result in a fine and loss of your driving license. From 1 February 2024, penalty rates increased. The fines are the same for everyone, regardless of whether you are a student or a billionaire.

New Fine Rates from February 2024

In accordance with the latest changes in the Act on traffic, from February 1, 2024, drivers can expect higher penalties for speeding. The new rates have been set in great detail in order to discourage drivers from speeding.

Here are the detailed fine rates for: speeding in accordance with the new tariff, which entered into force on February 1, 2024, in Norway:

When the speed limit is 60 km/h or less:

  • 5 km/h too fast: NOK 1150
  • 10 km/h too fast: NOK 3150
  • 15 km/h too fast: NOK 5650
  • 20 km/h too fast: NOK 8200
  • 25 km/h too fast: NOK 12700

When the permitted speed is 70 km/h or more:

  • 5 km/h too fast: NOK 1150
  • km/h too fast: NOK 3150
  • 15 km/h too fast: NOK 5050
  • 20 km/h too fast: NOK 7050
  • 25 km/h too fast: NOK 9550
  • 30 km/h too fast: NOK 12700
  • 35 km/h too fast: NOK 15200

When exceeding the speed of 90 km/h or more:

  • For speeding from 36 km/h to 40 km/h inclusive: NOK 15850

Consequences of Speeding

In addition to the financial consequences, speeding can lead to more serious consequences, including loss of your driving license and prison sentences in the event of significant exceedance of permitted limits.

Loss of driving license and penalty points

  • Loss of driving license: Depending on the speed limit, the loss of your driving license can range from 3 to 36 months.
  • Penalty points: Penalty points are awarded for exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 km/h at a speed limit of 60 km/h or less, and for exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 km/h at higher limits.
