According to the Norwegian Statistical Office, in Norway in 2021, immigrants accounted for 32 percent of scientists and academic staff. Most came from Europe and almost a quarter came from Asia. About half of life sciences and technology scientists are from an immigrant background in 2021.
Scientists and professional academic staff, hereinafter referred to as scientists, numbered approximately 2021 people in 39. Among them, almost 300 people were immigrants (12 percent), and about 750 people were born in Norway in the family immigrants (0,7 percent).
– The higher percentage of Norwegian-born people with immigrant parents, both in the population and especially among students, suggests that this group will constitute a larger part of the surveyed population in the long term, says Erik Fjærli, head of the section for research and development, innovation and business development.

Most scientists with an immigrant background come from Europe
Among immigrants and Norwegian-born, more than 60 percent of scientists came from Europe. Here, countries such as Germany and Sweden were in the lead in 2021.
24 percent of scientists with an immigrant background came from Asia. Most from countries such as China, India and Iran. If we look at the Norwegian-born group with immigrant parents separately, more than half came from Asia.
Life sciences and technology recruit a large proportion from abroad
In 2021, almost half of scientists in the life sciences as well as technology had an immigrant background (49%). This is the highest percentage among thematic areas. In the humanities and social sciences and medicine and health sciences, roughly one in four researchers came from an immigrant background.
In 2021, 38 percent. of male scientists worked in medicine and healthcare. However, the gender distribution among those with and without an immigrant background was different. 36 percent of researchers with no immigrant background were male, compared to 46 percent among researchers with an immigrant background in medicine and healthcare. We do not find the same differences in the gender distribution of scientists with and without an immigrant background in the natural and technical sciences and the humanities and social sciences.
Many internationally mobile researchers
Almost 80 percent of researchers with an immigrant background are internationally mobile researchers. They come to Norway with higher education from abroad, most often with a master's or doctorate. Many take temporary positions as postdoctoral researchers or research associates. There, immigrants accounted for 71 and 43 percent of staff respectively in 2021.
