– Conduct Norway through the green change is one of our most important responsibilities as a government. To further develop Norway, the answer to almost all questions is that we need more power. That's why today is a milestone, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

– The government's ambition is to allocate areas under 2040 MW of offshore wind energy by 30, which is more or less as much as the whole of Norway produced last year. Now it's the starting shot and it's important that we keep up the pace, says Støre.

The Ministry of Oil and Energy today announces a competition for design areas for offshore renewable energy production in two areas on the Norwegian Continental Shelf: Southern North Sea II and Utsira Nord.

– We are now waiting for many good applications so that we can allocate project areas later this year, says Minister of Petroleum and Energy Terje Aasland.

The Minister of Oil and Energy says that the industry's input was very important for the announced competitions.

We enable the construction of a new industry

“Collaboration is key in this work and I am very pleased with all the input we received in the consultation round. We are making it possible to build a new industry and achieve more renewable energy production and a solid development in terms of innovation and technological development, says Aasland.

The Energy Commission's report, which was presented earlier this year, indicates that we need to build more renewable energy faster than before. Therefore, work has already begun on the assessment of new areas for offshore wind energy. The government is also planning a new round of tenders in 2025.

– Dialogue with various interest groups was a prerequisite for us to ensure good coexistence. Norway has a good tradition of progressive continental shelf development. We will do the same with our investment in offshore wind energy, says Aasland.

“Norway has great potential in offshore wind energy. Norway's sea area is five times larger than our land area, and there is a lot of wind along our coast. In addition, we have qualified specialists and companies that contribute to the development of this technology, says Støre.
