From May 2 in Oslo and Viken, all refugees who seek asylum in Norway will be able to use public transport for free. This is good news for refugees, who often have a difficult life situation. The offer will be valid for a year and will apply to all asylum seekers in Norway, not only from Ukraine, as was the case before. This decision has been made to help those who need support the most. However, refugees without documents confirming their status will not be able to take advantage of the program.

Norway is a country where the number of refugees is constantly growing.

Currently, it amounts to over 244 people, which constitutes 4,5% of the country's population. Most refugees have recently arrived from Ukraine – over 22 people were located in 234 Norwegian municipalities before the war. In 2023, the Inclusion and Diversity Authority (Imdi) asked local authorities to provide places for another 35 people. However, these estimates are uncertain and there may be a need to accommodate higher numbers of refugees in the spring.

The decision to introduce free public transport for refugees in Norway is one example of actions taken by the government and organizations to improve living conditions for migrants and refugees. It is certainly a huge support for people who often move to the country without means of subsistence and have to look for work and other ways to provide for their basic needs.

Integration

helps them move around the city more easily, which in turn makes it easier for them to access work, schools, medical facilities and other places that are important to their everyday lives. This can also help integrate into the local community, which is important for the psychological well-being of migrants and refugees.

However, this decision does not solve all the problems faced by refugees in Norway. Many people who come to the country do not have access to housing, which is a serious problem. Although the government Norway is planning to build new housing for refugees, this is still a problem that has not been solved.

In addition, although Norway is one of the countries that receive the most refugees in the world, the situation for migrants and refugees in the country is not ideal. Cases of discrimination and racism against immigrants have emerged in recent years, with some politicians making controversial statements about refugees and migrants.

Therefore, it is important to continue efforts to improve the situation of migrants and refugees in Norway. Further initiatives are needed, such as better housing, protection against discrimination, as well as training and job assistance programmes. Only then will refugees be able to feel safe and integrate with the local community.
