The organization Nettpatruljen in Oslo received information about a video of violence that several people shared on social media. Nettpatruljen reported three people who shared the video. In March, one person was given a suspended prison sentence of 21 days and a fine of NOK. 10 000. In addition, he must pay compensation in the amount of NOK. 10 to the victim who is the victim of violence in the video.

– We are very happy that the verdict has been passed in the case regarding the sharing of violent videos on social media. This case shows us that sharing a video can affect more people than those involved in the video, says police attorney Johannes Hafsahl.

The video was made available without and with the details removed. One of the people in the video, who was only 13 years old, received threats for several weeks. For a time, the family had to move out of the house and the children had to have a police escort to football practice.

“This shows that sharing videos on social media can have huge ramifications for some people. This in turn also means that it is important that we at Nettpatruljen work with such cases and choose to report and monitor these cases, says the head of Nettpatruljen in Oslo, Anne Katrin Storsveen Oppegaard.

Good teamwork

Reporting to Nettpatruljen in Oslo, good police work and internal cooperation with lawyers from the central unit led to the referral of this case for legal adjudication and sentencing.

– Obtaining final rulings on social media video sharing cases is key. We have to take things like this seriously,” says Johannes.

“Those of us who worked on this case helped create case law in a very important area. We also hope to get more case law in more cases, says Anne Katrin.

The person is convicted on the basis of

Penal Code § 267a, sharing of offensive pictures, etc. For unjustifiably sharing with another person a video of an offensive nature, for example, of a person who is a victim of violence or other humiliation.
