“Everyone who wears a customs officer's uniform on a daily basis contributes to making Norway safer. They are doing important work in the fight against the importation of drugs and other illegal goods. They have a lot of experience and a strong presence on the border with Norway. Thanks to this, customs officers will also be able to contribute to the fight for safety on our roads - says Finance Minister Trygve Slagsvold Vedum.

May use force against a driver under the influence of drugs

From July 1, 2023, changes will be made to the Road Traffic Act that will enable the Norwegian Customs Office to carry out a preliminary examination of whether the driver of a motor vehicle is under the influence of drugs. The test can be performed when the vehicle is stopped for goods inspection. The customs authority will also have the right to forcibly detain the driver if the person tries to evade control or until the driver is handed over to the police.

Until now, only the police were authorized to carry out checks on drivers under the influence of intoxicants.
