NVE and Grønn Byggallianse are collaborating this year on the 'Catch the energy thief' campaign. The aim is to find energy thieves in both commercial and public buildings and thus contribute to energy efficiency and energy savings.

– It is important to find simple measures that will save a lot of electricity with relatively little effort, at no cost. The campaign is free and open to everyone. If you want to save electricity at work, school or in a housing association, you should help catch energy thieves this autumn, says Maren Esmark, head of the section for energy consumption and European framework conditions at NVE.

The goal of the campaign, as we read on the NVE website, is to reduce unnecessary electricity consumption and save operating costs in both public and private buildings.

Who are the typical energy thieves?

Typical energy thieves are energy-intensive sources that remain on in buildings when people are not in them.

Here are some examples:

  1. Ventilation systems: It is common for ventilation systems to remain on even when there is no need to change the air. For example, in offices or other buildings where work takes place at certain times, ventilation systems are kept on XNUMX/XNUMX, consuming energy unnecessarily after working hours.
  2. Lighting: If the lights in a building are on when people are not present, this is an example of unnecessary energy consumption. This may be due to forgetting to turn off the lights after leaving the premises, or the lack of use of motion sensors or automatic lights.
  3. Computer Monitors: Often computer monitors do not turn off after use or remain in sleep mode for a long time, leading to unnecessary power consumption. It's important to remember to turn off your monitors when you're finished working or using the sleep function.
  4. Heating and cooling: If heating or cooling systems are completely unnecessary or are set to the wrong temperatures, they can use a large amount of energy, it is a waste of energy.

The above examples are typical situations where devices may consume electricity unnecessarily. It is important to consciously manage electrical devices and take care to turn them off or regulate their operation depending on the real needs and presence of people in the building.

The "Catch the energy thief" campaign is addressed to building managers. It aims to help identify and eliminate energy sources that cause unnecessary consumption.

The action will start on October 16

Both economic and public entities are encouraged to participate in this campaign. Recently, NVE (Norwegian Energy Agency) was appointed coordinator for energy efficiency. It aims to increase interest and show the energy saving potential in all sectors. The action will start on October 16 and will last for a week. NVE and Grønn Byggallianse encourage business entities, public institutions and municipalities to work together to inspect buildings and catch energy thieves. Examples of buildings that can be checked include office buildings, shopping malls, housing associations, schools, kindergartens and operational buildings.

It is important to involve both private business, municipalities and public institutions in achieving energy efficiency. This goal is the result of many small and large decisions. Every kilowatt-hour of energy saved contributes to business, climate, nature and can also help reduce electricity costs.

Why is it worth catching energy thieves?

When we catch energy thieves and reduce unnecessary consumption, consumption and costs will fall in the short term without compromising comfort. Together, we strive for more efficient use of energy in buildings, which can free up energy resources for other areas of society. By achieving energy efficiency, we contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We save also nature against the negative effects resulting from the development of the energy sector and the grid.

Often, eliminating energy thieves who steal kilowatt hours does not involve high costs. By joining the campaign, your company can identify and implement simple measures to reduce energy consumption, such as also save money and contribute to increasing the energy efficiency of buildings.

More information about the campaign can be found on the website  fangenertyven.info where you can also register your buildings now.
