There is an extremely high risk of forest fires in many places in southern Europe this summer. Several countries are already affected, including Greece, Italy and Croatia. This is very serious for the countries concerned, but could also have serious consequences for Norwegian residents on holiday, says Foreign Ministry communications chief Tuva Bogsnes.
Travelers must remain vigilant and monitor developments.
“It is important to stay up to date with the situation, listen to the advice of local authorities and follow their instructions. Those traveling with tour operators should also check with a travel agent, says Bogsnes.
The situation in Greece remains serious in several places. Rhodes is the hardest hit, but other places in the country are also very vulnerable to forest fires during the summer months. This also applies to other countries in the Mediterranean region.
“Travellers need to be aware that the situation can change quickly. High temperatures and strong winds can quickly spark new fires in new places. Those who are going on a trip should plan for situations that can arise quickly, says Bogsnes.
There is currently a fierce fight against forest fires in Greece, Italy and Portugal.
“There is no doubt that all available means are now being used in this case. Tourists on vacation will probably also be able to notice it, also in places that are not directly affected by fires.
Norwegian Ministry Foreign Affairs is monitoring the situation closely, both from its 24-hour center in Oslo and from embassies in affected countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides advice and guidance to Norwegian travelers. However, it is emphasized that it is up to the traveler to decide if he or she wants to take the planned trip.
If you want to receive a notification from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, you can register your trip in the app Reissue declaration or on the site reiseregistring.no.
