Due to the heavy rainfall in recent days, a red flood warning is maintained in the Randsfjorden and Tyrifjorden. The water flow in Drammenselva is increasing and is expected to peak on Tuesday with a high orange alert level in Mjøndalen.

The red alert applies only to the main waterway, not to smaller rivers. Danger level red is a very serious situation that can lead to widespread flooding and flood damage to buildings and infrastructure.

The flood peak will occur on Tuesday or Wednesday in the lower reaches of Drammensvassdraget

Krøderen is rising and is expected to reach its flood peak, at orange level, on Tuesday. The level of the Randsfjord continues to rise and will reach its flood peak on Wednesday, just below the post-Hans level. The Tyrifjorden is also rising and is expected to reach its flood peak on Tuesday or Wednesday, also just below Hansa.

– Flood levels in the large Drammensvassdraget lakes continue to increase, and in the lower reaches of the Drammen River in Mjøndalen, the water flow will continue to increase over the next few days. The flood peak is expected to be reached on Tuesday at high orange. This is 30-40 cm above the water level we had in Mjøndalen near Hans, says Elise Trondsen, a flood watcher at NVE.

– At Storelva in Hønefoss, the flood peak is expected to be reached on Monday, with a lower water flow than during the Hans period, but the high water flow will remain high for several days, adds Trondsen

– The red level is very serious and the water level in several rivers and lakes is still rising. Therefore, we recommend that people stay away from floodplains and, if possible, secure and move valuables away from flood-prone areas, adds Elise Trondsen

Slowly rising water level in Mjøsa and Øyeren

– The water level in Mjøsa is rising very slowly and is expected to stabilize on Tuesday, less than 10 cm above the level on Monday morning. Flood peak in Øyeren is expected to be reached on Tuesday, about 10 cm above the current level, says Elise Trondsen, a flood watcher at NVE.

Swimming is dangerous

In addition to the most obvious - a strong current in the river, which can take you away, there may be wood and other things in the water that may surprise you.

At present, the risk of landslides and flooding is generally low, but the landslide warning remains at yellow along flood-prone waterways in eastern Norway. This is because the soil along the riverbank can subside.

– The river erodes when the water flow is high. Also note that slippage can also occur when the water level drops as long as the ground is wet. That's why you shouldn't stay along the banks of rivers that have flooded or have recently flooded, warns Solveig Kosberg, a landslide watcher at NVE.

Advice for the people

– Avoid traffic in flood-prone areas

– Limit damage by moving valuables away from flood-prone areas, e.g. boat, car, caravan

– Stay away from the river bank, even if the water in the waterways subsides due to unstable slopes that can lead to landslides

– Contact the emergency services or municipal authorities if you need urgent help in the event of a flood or landslide

– Stay up to date with varsom.no threat alerts, local news and traffic alerts
