The number of retirees in Norway is constantly growing

In the first half of 2023, as many as 35,5 thousand people retired, the highest number in 8 years, and the National Pensions Authority (NAV) predicts further growth in the coming years. This is much more than in previous years, where in the first six months of 2023 the number of new retirees increased by 37,6 thousand, compared to 33,2 thousand. during the same period in 2022, an increase of 6,8 percent.

According to NAV, the main reason for this increase is the growing number of people aged 62-67 who are entering retirement. Furthermore, NAV department director Ole Christian Lien suggests that price increases may have prompted more people to start drawing their pension this year, especially those still working. This trend is expected to continue as the number of retirees continues to grow in the coming years.

At the end of June 2023, the number of retirees was 1 thousand. people, which means an increase by 029,3 thousand compared to June 19,6. Despite this, people are working longer than before, and the average retirement age in the first half of 2022 was 2023, which is an increase of 66 years compared to 0,2.

The new pension rules covered almost all new pensioners, with those born between 1954 and 1962 receiving part of the pension according to the new rules pension calculation, and future retirees born in 1963 and later receive their entire pension according to these rules. Now, as much as 97 percent new retirees benefit from new regulations that take into account all years of work.

New retirees receive part of their pension in accordance with the new rules and part in accordance with the previous ones. The size of both shares varies according to age cohort, with younger groups receiving an increasing share under the new rules. For example, the 1954 group receives one-tenth of the pension under the new rules, and the 1962 group receives as much as nine-tenths.
