Norway enters into a cooperation agreement with KONGSBERG and Raytheon to further develop the NASAMS air defense system

– We must strengthen and further develop air defense to better protect civilian and military targets against air attacks. The war in Ukraine showed how important air defense is during war. The cooperation agreement we signed with the Norwegian KONGSBERG and the American Raytheon lays the foundations for further development of the combat-proven NASAMS air defense system against future threats, says Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.

Today, the Norwegian Ministry of Defense announced that a new cooperation agreement has been concluded between Norway, Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace (KDA) and Raytheon to further develop the NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System). The agreement, signed earlier in October at the Norwegian Ambassador's residence in Washington, D.C., will reinforce the already powerful and combat-proven capabilities of the NASAMS system and its unique position in the market.

NASAMS is a highly flexible and adaptable medium-range air defense solution, developed and produced in cooperation between Raytheon and Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace, in close cooperation with the Norwegian defense sector. The new cooperation agreement builds on decades of experience, industrial cooperation and significant investments by the three parties and lays the foundation for specific projects that will enable NASAMS to address new and complex air threats.

“Today we celebrate an important milestone in establishing NASAMS as the world's leading medium-range missile defense system,” said Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Missile Defense Systems at Raytheon. – We will continue to invest in developing NASAMS to support the Norwegian defense system and our allies around the world.

“We look forward to continued successful three-way collaboration between KONGSBERG, Raytheon and the Ministry of Defense to further improve NASAMS, giving it the mobility and operational flexibility needed to protect people and vital assets in the future,” says Kjetil Reiten Myhra, Director of Integrated Defense Systems at Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace.

Future purchases of the NASAMS system

The government plans to present two air defense projects for approval in Parliament during the upcoming 2023 budget amendment proposal under the Ministry of Defence. These are Project 7821, aimed at purchasing missiles for the NASAMS missile defense system, and Project 1146, aimed at reproducing donated main components for NASAMS. In addition, a proposal will be presented to change the scope of Project 7628 Air Defense as a result of the donation.
