The Directorate of Education in Norway has proposed new measures to prevent school absenteeism and we have received several reactions from involved students. Many students are skeptical about some of our proposals - this is valuable feedback for us.

In the following text, the director of Udir (Directorate of Education), Morten Rosenkvist, writes about why the Directorate of Education believes that the recommendations are good for students.
Dear students!
We agree that you need more trust, not less. That is why trust in you is important to us and should be reflected in the proposal for new absence rules.
We are raising the absenteeism limit from 10 to 15 percent. We are also removing the visit requirement doctor to obtain a leave of absence doctor for short-term absences. You know when you are too sick to go to school, and we need to reflect that in the regulations. At the same time, it may be unfair to those of you who are far from a doctor or have difficulty paying a bill that you have to go to the doctor when you are sick but don't actually need medical attention.
As one student points out in his post, students who exceed 15 percent absences under our project may lose their eligibility for grades. However, we suggest that the school monitors all absences and takes action to accommodate each student's individual needs. The principal may also decide that students who exceed 15 percent can still receive grades if the teacher has a basis for assessing their performance. In addition, our project aims to protect students with disabilities or chronic diseases. These students are still exempt from regulations regarding absences.
It is important that as many students as possible receive their certificates. No student is the same, and all students are entitled to support. That's why we want schools to have a greater ability to assess situations based on what's happening in a student's life. Our main goal is for students to be at school as often as possible to learn and participate in society. This is your right as disciples.
The draft new absenteeism rule will be subject to consultation to give everyone the opportunity to express their views. We hope to hear from more of you and get valuable comments like the ones we have received now.
