Cats, known for their curiosity and attachment to the world around them, often choose to stay outdoors, even when the temperature drops below freezing. However, how long can these animals safely stay out in the cold? According to experts, there are important guidelines that should be followed to keep cats comfortable and healthy during the winter months.

Cold cats use a lot of energy to maintain body temperature. Cats can easily get frostbite in exposed areas such as their ears, tail and paws.

Pet care experts recommend limiting the time cats spend in the cold to short intervals. Despite natural resistance to low temperatures, cats also experience the negative effects of long-term exposure to frost. Ideally, the time outside should not exceed a few minutes, especially in very low temperatures.

As cats spend more time outdoors, it is important to provide them with adequate shelter from the cold and moisture. If cats do not go outside freely through a flap or other means, they must have access to a dry and comfortable place to lie down. This is a place where your cat can take shelter from the elements and when it is cold.

Access to a soft, warm and dry place is important

If a cat is to be able to hide in an outbuilding or garage, it must also have access to a soft, warm, dry and draft-free place to sleep.

Cats must not be kept in uninhabited houses, sheds or caravans, where they have only minimal supervision and little contact with people.

Such a sleeping place can be a plastic container or box. Such a container should have an opening large enough for the cat to freely enter and exit. Place a cold insulating material on the bottom. You can put a rug or blanket inside. You need to know that some materials absorb moisture, so you should check it from time to time, at least in winter. Place such a box in a quiet place, preferably slightly above earth, if it's possible.

Regular observation and care of cats during winter is crucial to their well-being. Providing them with enough water and appropriate food also helps maintain their health and comfort.
