Our goal is to eliminate as many cars as possible that should not be on the road, says Kjetil Mansåker Wigdel, director of the external control department at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
More than 46 passenger cars and delivery vans were checked on the roads
By the end of December 2023, the Norwegian Public Roads Authority stopped 46 vehicles for inspection. 655 of them had defects and deficiencies. Of these, 23 were banned and 405 were reported for serious problems and omissions.
– When the majority of people we stop respond, it shows how targeted our checks are. Our goal is to eliminate as many cars as possible that should not be on the road. We focus on those that have errors or omissions. This means that those who have everything in order can continue without stopping, thus saving time, says the director of the external audit department at Norwegian Road Administration Public, Kjetil Mansåker Wigdel.

Remember to secure your load and check your lights
Several light vehicles that were stopped during inspections in 2023 were issued both bans and fines.
The most common mistakes are too heavy a load on the car or trailer, improper securing of the load and faulty lighting. Worn tires without an acceptable tread depth are also something inspectors often notice during inspections.

– Please remember that both the car and the trailer have a maximum permissible weight. New electric cars are heavy, so they cannot carry such a large load. Trailers also have a maximum permissible weight. That's why it's worth checking the vehicle's driving license to make sure you can actually drive that trailer, Wigdel says.

It is important to, to secure the load while drivingso that it does not fall. You should also check the lighting of your car and trailer, especially in winter when it is snowing and dark outside. In recent years, the use of LED lights in cars and trailers has become increasingly common, which can pose challenges.
– Since LED lamps do not emit heat, snow settling on them does not melt either. Dangerous traffic situations may then occur because oncoming drivers may have difficulty seeing the car. If you intend to cover longer distances, it is worth taking a few breaks along the way so that the lights of both the car and the trailer are visible to other road users, concludes Wigdel.
