Society loses over half a billion kroner every year to digital fraud. A common element in many fraud attempts is the use of electronic communications. Now the National Communications Authority (Nkom) is appealing to the owners network mobile phones to take further action to stop fraudsters.

Over half a billion losses every year

In a survey conducted by Nkom last year, 1 in 4 people responded that they had been exposed to digital fraud or identity theft.

Johannes Vallesverd is a senior advisor at Nkom and head of the national anti-digital fraud expert group. He believes that the fact that the problem affects so many people is serious and believes that further measures are necessary.

The social consequences of fraud are extensive

– Both the human and social consequences of fraud are extensive. It is very important that the public has confidence in electronic communications, and a growing number of them do fraud attempts poses a threat to him, says Vallesverd.

Recently, Nkom sent a letter to the operators: Telenor, Telia and Ice, in which, among other things, they were asked to further strengthen coordination work to stop fraudsters.

– We must increase "border control" in the case of calls to manipulated numbers from abroad. Therefore, we are now asking Telenor, Telia and Ice to intensify their work and develop common solutions to limit the possibility of using Norwegian mobile numbers for fraud - we read in the Nkom information

100 million fraud attempts

Nkom, along with others, is a driving force in the fight against digital fraud. Last year, Norway's largest mobile network owners stopped over 100 million fraud attempts. Vallesverd believes the industry is doing well, but further measures are needed.

– Much of digital fraud takes place via traditional channels such as voice calls and text messages, and this is our main focus at the moment. We also expect a stronger exploitative fraud element artificial intelligence. Criminals are creative in their fraud methods. Therefore, we, the authorities and companies, must work well together to counter this form of organized crime, says Vallesverd.
