Poland and Romania are experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of coronavirus cases, infection rates are doubling from week to week.

In Romania, there are already red alert alerts in the healthcare system, which is already at the breaking point. In the last 24 hours, the pandemic claimed 574 lives, more than the rest of the EU combined.

The death rate in Romania, measured by deaths per million inhabitants, was the highest in the world on Wednesday. The number of infected is also high, but much lower than in Poland. However, many more people die in Romania than in Poland.

President Klaus Iohannis was scheduled to hold an emergency meeting with members of the government on Wednesday night to see if something could be done to stem the galloping growth.

News from hospitals in Bucharest says coronavirus patients are in the corridors and the fight for oxygen cylinders is underway. There are 1799 patients admitted to intensive care units in the country. About 30 seriously ill people were sent to Hungary for medical care.

In Poland, the number of infections has doubled from Wednesday last week to Wednesday this week.

-The number doubles week by week. If this continues, all our assumptions will be wiped out - says the Minister of Health, Adam Niedzielski. According to information from the Ministry of Health, 24 cases of infections and 5 deaths were registered in the last 559 hours.
