Violent storms in the Tatras. The lightning hit Giewont! - there are victims. On the Polish side, 4 people died, and on the side of Slovakia 1. There are children among the victims. Over 100 people were injured, many people in serious condition were transported to hospitals in Zakopane, Nowy Targ, Kraków, Limanowa and others. What is the situation like? What do we know? 

The lightning hit Giewont! - what is the situation?

At the time of the impact, there were 20 people on Giewont. The lightning struck the cross. Some people were hit there directly, because the information was that after a lightning strike, people fell even on the south side of Giewont.

“To rażenie poszło po łańcuchach ubezpieczających wejście na kopułę uderzając wszystkich po kolei.”- says the head of TOPR.

There were many wounded people who lay motionless. Nearby - lightning also struck in Kościelisko. A tourist also died on the Slovak side.

Lightning hit Giewont - mourning in Zakopane on Friday

Mourning will be introduced in the capital of the Tatra Mountains on Friday. On this day, the final concert, crowning the 51st International Mountain Folklore Festival, was to take place. The concert will be canceled.

- We are currently planning to organize the end of the festival on Friday, where we want to hand out trophies for the best groups. We will also celebrate the victims of the tragic storm in the Tatra Mountains- said the steward of Zakopane.

What do we know about Giewont?

giewont – mountain massif in the Western Tatras with a height of 1894 m above sea level and a length of 2,7 km. Its main peak, Wielki Giewont, is often considered the highest a peak in the Western Tatras located entirely in Poland[1]; However, Twarda Kopa is higher in the vicinity of Czerwony Wierchów[2], overlooked due to its low level of prominence.
