Heavy and heavy snowfall in Norway is nothing new. Although the inhabitants are used to the charms of the prevailing climate, last year only one municipality applied for a snow dump. The problem is getting bigger and bigger as the amount of contaminated snow grows every year.
First snow
Today, the southern and western parts of Norway welcomed the first real snowfall this year. Even though the snow started to melt so quickly as soon as it fell, we have more and more signs that winter is fast approaching and is inevitable. Last winter, the Norwegians experienced a thick layer of snow on the hills and all the landfills, ie the snow dumps, were still overcrowded.

The problem with contaminated snow
The problem of contaminated snow has been discussed quite loudly recently. In some places it has led to many headaches. People in several municipalities decided to take matters into their own hands and get rid of snow at their own risk. Inhabitants of the city of Kristiansand in West Agdera have made the decision to dump snow into the River Otra. Additionally, the municipality is also working with the county governor to collect snow samples. Their results are to show the degree of its contamination. Next year, the project will be completed and the municipality will decide how it will deal with the snow and whether it will snow dump.
No snow management plans
Not all municipalities have made the decision to manage the excess snow. There are hardly a single municipality in Oslo and Akershus with a snow plan. Recently, the governor even sent an appropriate reminder because the matter is getting serious and winter is fast approaching. He is in talks with the capital, but so far has received only one request from Bærum regarding the establishment of snow dump.

Contamination in drinking water
Ski has no help either. In April this year, a snow study showed that contaminated substances could have entered the drinking water in Oppegård municipality. “We have received an order from the district governor to investigate this matter further. We hired the right experts, but it took a long time to prepare the report, ”we read in NRK the words of Tom Schei, communications manager.
A place for a snow dump
Many solutions are still being sought that would be helpful in getting rid of the excess residual snow. That year, the Frogn commune coped with the snow throwing it straight into the fjord in Drøbak. Unfortunately, they had no other choice. This year, at worst, they also have permission to do so, but the target plan is to find a suitable solution, writes Amta.
