Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen spoke on the phone on Wednesday afternoon about the demanding energy situation in Europe.
On Wednesday, the European Commission presented proposals for measures to deal with the very difficult energy situation in Europe.
- Norway is a stable and reliable gas supplier to Europe, so it is natural that we conduct a close dialogue on the demanding situation of Europe. It is good that our partners and allies in Europe are discussing different solutions to the same difficult situation that arose as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, we cannot introduce measures that have unintended consequences and which, in the worst case, may worsen the situation in the long run, says Prime Minister Støre.
Europe is our most important market
– Now we will carefully review the proposals that the EU is currently considering and we will be open to discussing various solutions. Europe is our most important market and close ally. Moreover, as is well known, high gas prices in Europe also affect electricity prices in Norway, says Støre.

Predictability and longevity
Ursula von der Leyen singled out Norway as the largest gas supplier to Europe. Prime Minister Støre noted that gas producers may conclude contracts with customers in Europe. The maximum price of gas was not a topic of conversation.
- It is the companies that sell gas. Predictability and long-term sustainability will be an advantage for both gas producers and consumers in Europe. It will also make it easier for Europe to get enough energy in the future, says Støre.
