March 11 last year Norwegian government introduced a program offering temporary collective protection to people displaced from Ukraine. The program means that persons covered by this program receive a residence permit under a simplified procedure, which does not require an individual assessment of the need for protection. These permits are valid for one year. The first permits issued under the program will expire in March 2023.

The amendment to the regulations gives persons who still meet the conditions for temporary collective protection the right to extend their permit for one year. When permits expire, they will be automatically renewed and those affected do not need to apply for an extension.

The Norwegian Immigration Office (UDI) and the police will renew expired residence cards to people could still provide documentation of legal residence in Norway.
