Water jacket fireplaces - construction

Constructed of double walls, the water jacket surrounds the combustion chamber. This allows you to collect the heat coming out of the furnace and give it back to the water, which is then transported to the central heating system - radiators or underfloor heating. Often, for better heat transfer, smoke tubes are used, through which the exhaust gas flows. The space between the walls and the smoke tubes is filled with water, which, while heating, can supply the above-mentioned installations.

What should be remembered?

By heating, the water volume increases. If the water fills a sealed vessel, the force with which it presses against its walls also increases. Therefore, in order to ensure safety, the system should be equipped with an open expansion vessel that will take the water flowing in the pipes when it increases in volume and provide protection against dangerous pressure increases. We should also remember to stock up on hardwood (beech, birch, ash, etc.), well-dried wood, seasoned for 1,5 to 2 years. Thanks to this, we will be forced to add wood less often, and we will also prevent the release of a large amount of soot or tar. At low temperatures, it is worth adding a portion of wood to the fireplace 2-3 times a day, preventing the system from cooling down and possible freezing. Therefore, a much more convenient solution is to combine a fireplace with a water cry with a gas or oil boiler.
