Immigrant women, after going to Norway, have a big problem to find employment. This is because many of them have not acquired, for example, writing and reading skills, which are the basis for starting a professional career. However, the Levanger Immigration Center has developed an effective method that allows you to learn these skills in record time. Currently, other municipalities in Norway are starting to implement this solution in their centers.
Immigrant women enter the labor market
The case of Samira shows how the developed method allows immigrant women to start their careers. She came to Norway from Afghanistan without literacy. She tried to go to school in her homeland, but she came from a poor family and it was impossible. The opportunity she received in Levanger was very motivating for her. She had the opportunity to change her social status, but first she had to undergo professional training related to learning to read and write, and she also had to learn Norwegian.

The method had a quick effect
Samira started her education in 2014. She found employment in 2017 and currently works in the healthcare sector. Such a quick result was achieved thanks to a project led by partners: Levanger commune, NAV and SINTEF. It is worth noting that the remaining immigrant women achieved similar results at a similar time. The case of Samira is no exception.

What is the method?
Good results of using this method meant that it was permanently included in the Center for Immigrants in Levanger. It is based on the already developed system of learning a foreign language for adults, but without reading and writing skills. In the developed educational system, immigrant women first acquire the ability to read and write in their mother tongue, in the meantime acquiring the ability to communicate in a foreign language. After mastering these skills, they begin learning words and phrases. At the end of the course, an appropriate certificate is issued, confirming linguistic competence.

Immigrant women need to be educated all the time
Participation in the project also provides for continuous improvement of linguistic and professional competences. Therefore, as he claims in an interview with ABCNyheter Rune Leirset - project manager - each participant of the training is subject to constant monitoring of the progress made in learning. She admits that “her experience proves that this group of women requires additional support all the time - even if they have been participating in the project for 2-3 years. This is why collaboration with NAV is required, which is responsible for assigning a personal assistant to the women participating in the training ”.
The project is of great sociological importance
By participating in the project, immigrant women not only have a chance to start a professional career. It is not without significance that their social status in the family changes significantly when they start contributing to the household budget. This is why a project that brings such effects is starting to be implemented in other districts as well. It enables the assimilation of immigrants from the Middle East. In particular, it brings great benefits to women who finally have a chance to fulfill themselves and earn the respect they deserve in their families.
