Polish firefighters to help Sweden

Polish firefighters reached the central part of Sweden with the equipment needed to extinguish forest fires. This equipment includes 44 rescue and firefighting vehicles, the crew is 140 firefighters, among them there are paramedics.

Request for support

This is a Polish response to the request of the Swedish authorities. The statement of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister presents an official request: “The trip to Sweden is connected with the official request of the local authorities, which, through the European Civil Protection Mechanism, asked for rescue support in the fight against forest fires. The fires are the result of a heat wave that the whole of Scandinavia has been struggling with for several days ”. Rescuers from the Zachodniopomorskie and Wielkopolskie voivodeships were sent to the action, with support from Masovia and the National Headquarters of the State Fire Service, consisting of 65 firefighters from both voivodeships, 20 vehicles, 9 rescuers and 4 wagons.

EMOL

It is a system of international rescue aid supervised and organized by the Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection of the European Commission. Its mission is to provide support to countries affected by a disaster that requires rescue intervention between nations. Specialist groups are made up of member states (28 European Union countries) as well as Montenegro, Iceland, Macedonia, Norway and Turkey. Under EMOL, Sweden asked for air support. The firefighting planes were provided by Italy.

Take the ferry to the rescue

The group set off from Świnoujście to Trelleborg. The Ministry of Border Affairs and Administration announced on Twitter that the Swedes welcomed the support of Poles on the route. Here is the content of the message: "The Swedes welcome the Polish firefighters of KGPSP, who will support their Swedish colleagues in the fight against the fire consuming the forests."

Plan of works

The action is to last two weeks. The equipment of Polish firefighters includes logistic equipment, quartermaster equipment, fuel and food. The tents that are part of the inventory will be used to establish a base of operations.

Norway also supports its neighbors by sending 6 helicopters. The Swedish authorities said that 44 forests were burning across the country. Residents of Gävleborg, Jämtland and Dalarny were evacuated. No casualties have been identified so far.
