Nursing Allowance in Norway is payable when your child is sick and caring for him or her requires resignation from work. This benefit is intended to compensate for the loss of income. However, obtaining these funds requires the fulfillment of many formalities. Read on to find out what the conditions for entitlement to the allowance are and how long it takes to withdraw funds.

Nursing supplement in Norway - who can get it?

The nursing supplement is granted to parents whose children are under 18 years of age. However, one of the following two conditions must be met:

  • the child must remain in the care of a hospital or
  • the child must stay at home due to the need to provide round-the-clock care. The disease must be serious enough to prevent the child from being left unattended.

Additionally, a sick child must be treated in a hospital or by a physiotherapist in a specialized health center.

Important! From February 1, 2018, you can receive maternity allowance while receiving the nursing supplement, if you additionally care for a sick or disabled child under 18 years of age.

Conditions for obtaining the nursing supplement in Norway

To qualify for a nursing supplement in Norway, the following cumulative conditions must be met:

  • be employed for at least 4 weeks before losing income as a result of the need to care for a child or receive unemployment, sickness, parental, health benefits or NAV training allowances,
  • get an income of 1G (national basic insurance rate),
  • loss of income due to the need to care for a sick child.

Nursing supplement in Norway for both parents

You will also need medical records. If the child is treated in hospital and the doctor issues all the necessary documents, both parents may be entitled to the nursing supplement in Norway. In order to obtain a benefit for both guardians while the child is at home, you will need a certificate from the doctor that the child requires constant care from both parents.

If neither of the above circumstances occurs, both parents can still receive the nursing supplement. In such a situation, however, it will be proportionally distributed, and it may be, for example, 50% for the mother and 50% for the father. It is possible to divide 100% of the amount differently, but one parent may receive a minimum of 20% of the amount of the benefit.

Chronic diseases

It is worth mentioning that the care supplement is generally not granted in the case of respiratory tract infections, eye diseases or childhood diseases. However, if they are a consequence of more serious illnesses, it is possible to obtain the right to the nursing benefit. A necessary condition is the fact that the child must be treated in a hospital or at home, if his condition requires round-the-clock care.

In the case of chronic diseases in a child, parents have the right to obtain auxiliary income from NAV. You can also contact the municipality where you live to find out if you are entitled to it communal care benefits or other forms of support.

Duration of the nursing supplement

Nursing Allowance in Norway can be paid for a maximum of 5 years with 100% coverage of the rate of pay for one parent. However, the social welfare system allows for situations in which the benefit may be granted for up to 10 years. They include, among others diagnosed with cancer in a child or its relapses or chronic diseases. In such circumstances, the amount of the nursing care supplement may be up to 66% of the wage coverage.

Nursing supplement in Norway

Nursing benefit is granted to parents who take care of a sick child. The condition is, however, that it should be treated in hospital. The social welfare system also allows for the possibility of receiving a nursing supplement when the child is at home. In this case, a medical certificate must be issued to justify this circumstance. You must also show loss of income that was not less than 1G. NAV will pay the benefit for a maximum of 5 years with 100% coverage of the wage rate. However, it may happen that the funds will be paid out for 10 years, but in an additional period you can count on a maximum of 66% coverage of the salary rate.
