Christmas is a special day on the calendar. Although from a religious point of view it is not the most important holiday of the year, in practice it remains the most awaited by Poles. It is a time of meetings, family atmosphere and beautiful traditions.
A place for an unexpected visitor
One of the most beautiful customs is to leave it on the Christmas Eve table additional cover. Today we consider it to be the place for the wanderer or an unexpected visitor. In some houses you can hear that empty seat at the table prepared for Jesuswho visits us during Christmas Eve. The tradition of singing Christmas carols has accompanied Poles since many agesw. The oldest Polish Christmas carol comes from 1424 and begins with words Be well, King of England. Their popularity increased, however, at the turn of the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. One of the most important ones was created then Polish Christmas songs Fri. He is lying in the manger. Authorship is attributed to Piotr Skarga. This custom is still alive and many contemporary performers compose their own religious songs dedicated to Christmas.
Advent
Advent Calendar it is not just an attraction for children. It sets a period preceding holidays. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. They make up him four sundays Advent, and the first of them begins the liturgical year in the Catholic Church. During this period, clergy put on purple robes during the liturgy.

How do we celebrate on Christmas Eve?

The supper, however, is preceded by tradition breaking the wafer, and prayer before Christmas Eve (although it depends on the specific house). There should be 12 dishes on the Christmas Eve table and, importantly, none of them should be meat.
St. Nicholas, Santa Claus, Jesus or an Angel?
After supper, there is the moment most awaited by the children - giving gifts. Depending on the region in Poland they are brought by St. Nicholas, Santa Claus, Jesus or Angel. The way they deliver them also varies. Here and there St. Santa leaves them under the Christmas tree, and in other places Star puts them on the table. Regardless of the tradition adopted - the joy of both the youngest and the oldest is always great!
