The wave of knife attacks in Oslo recently seems to have increased significantly. The public is concerned that this may turn out to be a big problem, especially since the police have stopped providing statistics since 2015.

Oslo and the knife attack wave

The last few knife attacks in Oslo have prompted police to pay more attention to the problem. It turns out that more and more young people carry this type of white weapon for defense purposes. Unfortunately, while the problem is getting worse, the police have not provided local or national statistics on knife assaults since 2015.

Changes are about to come

The statistics on knife assaults ceased to exist on the day of the introduction of the new Penal Code, i.e. October 1, 2015. At present, the state wants the police to re-register these types of attacks. According to ABCNYHETER, Justice Minister Tor Mikkel Wara (Frp) does not want to comment on whether it is appropriate to instruct the police to resume the registration system.

8 years difference and an increase of 18,3%

Data obtained by NTB from the Norwegian Police Directorate indicate that in 2018 there were 873 crimes involving the use of a knife. Ultimately, this is a slight decrease compared to the previous year and the number of 892 cases. On the other hand, the number of crimes involving the use of a knife has increased by 2011% since 18,3. Last year resulted in the death of eight people who were killed by a knife. The year 8 was the hardest, because 2013 such people died then, and the year 20 brought them the least, because they were 2009. The police undertook to present data for 9 next week.

According to the police

Oslo Police Chief Hans Sverre Sjovold believes the missing statistics have nothing to do with the work done by officers. He also adds that he does not think the current registration would make their actions good or worse. The most important thing for the police is that they manage to catch criminals and punish them.
