Social welfare fraud is on the rise as Nav reported 968 cases last year. As a result of these actions, the office wrongly disbursed over NOK 8 billion.

Social Benefit Fraud

Nav reports a large number of social welfare scams every year, although it is very hard to catch someone in a lie. The probability of proving someone that he is lying to the office is very small. For this reason, the office loses a lot of money every year because last year it paid over NOK 506 billion, which in turn constitutes almost a third of the entire state budget. In addition, it turns out that a large part of these funds should be returned because 968 people committed a social fraud.

8 billion crowns

According to the statistics kept by Nav, the office pays 8 billion kronor every year, which is caused by social frauds. Unfortunately, only 2% of this amount is reported because, as we wrote earlier, it is difficult to prove a lie to someone. So far, the largest fraud in 2018 was NOK 2,3 billion. People who have committed this act are currently waiting for information about the consequences, and these will certainly come because Nav, according to the data out of 100 reported cases, can acquit only 2.

Greater exacerbations

It turns out more and more often that thanks to more frequent inspections, various means, such as the Internet, or more stringent measures, the office manages to find fraud faster and more efficiently before it is actually reported. Nav officials also believe that thanks to a more rigorous approach to granting social benefits, the amount of fraud is decreasing. The most common offenses occur among: people who are unemployed and on benefits rehabilitation. It is this group of people who most often commit social lies while working. When it comes to cities, this is the most frauds are reported in Oslo, NOK 28,6 million was wrongly paid there last year.
