Heavy rains, heavy snowfall, or, as has happened recently, severe droughts. All this negatively affects not only the ecosystem and our planet - its general condition, but also the proper functioning of energy networks. The electricity grid in Norway must be replaced. According to the latest data, Agder Energi will spend 200-300 million CZK a year on the new transmission network. The entire initiative will last as long as 10 years. As part of it, 2000 kilometers of routes will also be cleaned.

Electricity grid in Norway - what is the situation?

Extreme weather conditions and climate change negatively affect the operation of energy networks. Agder counties (Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder) have been working towards greater security of electricity supply for a long time.

Sven Are Folgerø, CEO of Agder Energi Nett says directly:

“2018 gave us a very clear picture of the challenges our company faces in ensuring security of supply. We cannot simply doubt climate change. We need to believe what experts say and take into account more frequent extreme weather conditions. More storms mean the need to clean the routes of transmission lines. The challenge is big because over the last ten years, 25 to 40 percent of the forest has increased.”

Electricity grid in Norway - what actions will be taken?

Agder Energi Nett intends to strengthen activities improving the level of energy security. The most important goals to be achieved are:

  • cleaning routes of transmission lines,
  • security of supply (intelligent transmission network),

“We are introducing the ability to remotely control and isolate areas with failures so that they do not affect other areas. The challenge is therefore development IT system. This is a natural development in our industry.” – emphasizes the president of Agder Energi Nett in an interview with Nattevisen.

  • new licenses for wind energy,
  • creating new, stronger and more stable transmission lines.

Will users pay more?

Clearing transmission routes, creating new lines. The plans are large and require a large financial investment. Will users pay more then? Not necessarily. The company is popular and gains a new group of customers. As a result, the costs will be spread between new and old users.
