Do you already know that you have been living in the new Norway since January 2020? Yes, it's not a joke! Research after the municipal-county reformation shows that practically 1,7 million Norwegians now live in the new municipality. At the same time, 13 counties become six new ones. Thanks to the reform, 119 municipalities joined forces more or less voluntarily. 47 communes are innovations from the turn of the year. It is worth emphasizing that there are 356 municipalities on the new Norwegian map. The number of counties is reduced to 11 - including Oslo. Read more! Get the details! We encourage you to read the text and watch our video from the Wataha studio!

What changes have occurred?

Recall - the municipalities of Nord-Trøndelag and Sør-Trøndelag have merged since January 1, 2018. So they do not belong to the six new ones. In the case of the commune of Rogaland, the commune of Møre og Romsdal, the commune of Nordland and the commune of Oslo, no changes have been made.

These are the counties on January 1, 2020:

Viken (Østfold, Akershus and Buskerud)
Inland (Hedmark and Oppland)
Vestfold and Telemark (Vestfold and Telemark)
Agder (Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder)
Westland (Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane)
Trøndelag (Nord-Trøndelag and Sør-Trøndelag - joined since 2018)
Troms and Finnmark (Troms and Finnmark)
Rogaland
Møre and Romsdal
Nordland
Oslo

This is just the beginning of changes ...

The process of merging the communes is not finished. Connecting communes will be successively implemented through: financial incentives, as well as providing poviat councils with resources that will help communes to connect. In addition, the intention is to make less known communes, and make less frequented regions more attractive.
