- It is dangerous to use a mobile phone while driving a car. This ban has been in force since 2000. Nevertheless, we see that many people are unable to put down their cell phones while driving. Therefore now we are raising the fines to 5000 crownsand points from two to three if someone uses a cell phone while driving, said Transport Minister Knut Arild Hareide.

The changes will be presented to the Minister and will enter into force on 1 January 2021. Currently, the fine in the form of a fine for using a mobile phone while driving is CZK 1700, plus two points. The government introduced penalty points for the use of mobile phones in 2019.

- It did not bring the expected effect. Therefore, we must now use stronger measures. I hope that thanks to the higher fines and one more point, the drivers will notice that this is a serious matter. Traffic should be as safe as possible. All attention has to be focused on what is happening while driving, says Hareide.

- It is important that the police apply sanctions that have both a preventive effect. And those that have greater consequences for those who break the law. I hope this is a change that people will think about and remember that using a cell phone while driving is unacceptable, says Justice and Crisis Management Minister Monica Mæland.

Increase of all fines in road cases In addition, the rates of all fines will be increased. This is due to the fact that they have not changed since 2018. The increase is a corresponding adjustment of the consumer price index from 2018 to 2020. These fines must act as a deterrent, said Transport Minister Knut Arild Hareide
